Oil is extracted within 2 to 3 hours of picking without the use of chemicals or excessive heat to ensure that its remarkable health benefits, flavour and freshness are maximised. Our oils are carefully blended to create the perfect balance of fruitiness, bitterness and pungency. Mechanical Harvesting
Having 180,000 trees to harvest is a massive task to pick manually. For this reason we trained our trees to be mechanically harvested. After viewing olive harvesters in Australia, Argentina, USA and Europe in conjunction with our sister company, Pex Hydraulics, we designed and developed our own harvester for the 2010 harvest. We will be building its partner for the 2011 Season. From trials we anticipate we will be able to harvest around one hectare per hour To date, 290ha have been planted and a further 40ha will be planted during 2010. At full production Greenleaf will produce approximately 850 000 litres of Extra Virgin Olive Oil per annum. The combination of exceptional soil, a Mediterranean climate notable for its long, hot summers and wet winters plus state-of-the-art technology (from harvesting to pressing) will ensure that within the next few years Greenleaf is set to become the largest grower and producers of Extra Virgin Olive Oil in South Africa. To meet demand we established the brands: Saint Sebastian Bay Extra Virgin Olive Oil and in the near future Saint Sebastian Bay Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Our brand name was inspired by the beautiful Saint Sebastian Bay adjacent to Cape Agulhas where The Greenleaf farm is situated. |
EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
What is Extra Virgin?Extra virgin olive oil is the natural oil from quality olives that have been picked straight off the tree and extracted as soon as possible without the use of chemicals or excessive heat to ensure that its remarkable health benefits, flavour and freshness are maximised. In addition to containing natural antioxidants, extra virgin olive oil has a distinctive olive fruity aroma and flavour which creates a tasteful experience for a wide variety of dishes. Extra virgin olive oils can be intensely flavoured and can also be strongly bitter and pungent. Many ‘early harvest’ styles fit in this category. Others can be very fruity with only hints of bitterness and pepper, while 'late harvest’ styles are typically mild with very ripe fruity flavours. Health Benefits The health benefits of extra virgin olive oil have long been researched. They include:
However, the higher levels of natural antioxidants and the higher proportion of monounsaturated fats generally found in extra virgin olive oil mean that it generally remains fresher longer than other edible oils. Provided they are stored properly in a cool, dark place, the majority of extra virgin olive oils will retain good flavour aroma and freshness for at 12 to 18 months The Best QualityThe extraction of oil from olives is a relatively straightforward process involving only a couple of critical steps. As producers, we know that if they use undamaged olives, process them quickly after picking, make use of a clean press and don't strive for excessive extraction, then sound quality olive oil will result. Once processed, our Extra Virgin Olive Oil undergoes chemical testing and is submitted to SA Olive for organoleptic testing in order to guarantee its quality and authenticity Our olive groves have been carefully planned and better equipped than traditional European farms to harvest olives on time and have them processed quickly. These are two key elements to achieve a high quality of extra virgin olive oil. In addition, it is much quicker for a bottle of our olive oil to reach the supermarket shelf than it is for an imported olive oil, therefore increasing the freshness and flavours of the product. |
